Yucatan, our newest Polydactyl at 8 weeks old, from the State of Maine.
The average cat has 18 toes, however, some cats have extra toes, those are called POLYDACTYL, a Greek term meaning many digits.
They also have nick names, Double Pawed- because their paws are double sized.
Snowshoe cat- Because they can walk through snow easy with their big feet.
Mitten Paws- because their paws look like mittens.
Hemingway cat- Because in the 1930's, Ernest Hemingway, who lived in what now is considered Old Town Key West, always had Polydactyl cats around. If you're ever in Key West, visit his home, now a museum, and you will see about 40 Polydactyls roaming around.
Polydactyls, besides being so darn adorable, use their paws as hands, they can grab things, open doors, and bat things around easier than the average cat. And they are great mousers!!
Guinness world record for the most toes, is 28, 7 toes on each paw.
I am so grateful to have these amazing polydactyls in my breeding program.
If you are interested in welcoming one of these beauties into your family, ask to be added to the Polydactyl list.
